Are the $140 Harris Tweed Vans Worth It? Depends How You Feel About Studs

The Harris Tweed Vans Old Skool is $140, and it's a lot louder than the name suggests. What you get, where the money goes, and the quieter shoe in the same pack.

Vans Premium Old Skool 36 Harris Tweed Review 2026

The short version

The Harris Tweed Vans look like a simple premium upgrade from a distance: Scottish wool on a classic Old Skool. Up close, they're something else. The $140 Old Skool 36 comes covered in jewels, pins and studs, with a greased, lived-in finish, cheetah-print insoles and distressed soles. It's a punk shoe wearing a tweed jacket.

So are they worth the premium? If you want exactly that, yes, and the math is kinder than it looks, because the tweed version is only $15 more than Vans' plain premium Old Skool. If you wanted a quiet tweed sneaker, these aren't it. Look at the Loafer 53 from the same pack instead.

$75is what a regular Old Skool costs. That's the gap you're weighing.

The verdict

Worth it, if you actually want the studs

Here's what you're getting, and the one thing that decides it.

Vans Premium Old Skool 36 Harris Tweed in Tweed Navy Blue

This isn't a tweed Old Skool in the way you might be picturing. Vans calls it refined meets rebellious, and it means it: the Harris Tweed upper comes loaded with jewels, pins, studs and contrast stitching, with a subtle greasing treatment for a lived-in look. Sneaker News adds that the pack carries orange cheetah-print insoles and distressed soles.

Underneath it's Vans' premium Old Skool 36, the shape based on the original 1977 Old Skool, with a cushier Sola Foam insole than the standard version.

Our call
Worth it if you want the full lookThe tweed itself only costs about $15 more than Vans' plain premium Old Skool. You're mostly paying for the attitude.
The studs are the point

If you were hoping for a quiet, tailored tweed sneaker, this isn't it. The embellishments aren't an accent, they're the design.

Buy it if

You want one loud, conversation-starting pair for fall and you like the mix of heritage cloth and punk hardware.

Skip it if

You wanted a subtle tweed sneaker to wear with chinos. The hardware will fight you on that.

What it actually is

Harris Tweed, explained in one minute

Harris Tweed isn't a style of fabric, it's a protected one. It's wool cloth handwoven by islanders in their own homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, and it's covered by its own Act of Parliament. Only cloth that meets those rules gets the Orb certification mark. It's the same material you'd find on a heritage sport coat, and it's thick, textured and warm.

Vans has worked with Harris Tweed before (Sneaker News covered a Harris Tweed Old Skool earlier this summer), but this fall pack goes further. The Old Skool 36 in Tweed Navy Blue comes with jewels along the Sidestripe, pins, studs and contrast stitching, plus what Vans calls subtle greasing for a lived-in look. The Slip-On gets the same treatment in red and blue tweed, and the Loafer 53 is the calmest of the three.

The base shoe matters too. The Old Skool 36 is Vans' premium take on the original 1977 Old Skool shape, and this one uses a Sola Foam ADC insole, which Vans describes as soft and durable cushioning. It's a nicer-built shoe than the $75 Old Skool before you get to the tweed.

The price ladder

Where your $140 actually goes

Three Old Skools on Vans' own site, cheapest to most expensive.

ShoePriceWhat the step buys you
Old Skool$75The classic canvas and suede shoe
Premium Old Skool 36$125Vans' premium build of the original shape
Premium Old Skool 36 Harris Tweed$140Harris Tweed uppers plus jewels, pins and studs

Read it that way and the tweed isn't the expensive part. The big jump is the $50 from a regular Old Skool to the premium one. The Harris Tweed and all the hardware add $15 on top of that. If you were already shopping the premium line, this is a small upcharge for something far more distinctive.

Beyond the brand

What we know, and what we don't

These released on September 24, so there's no long-term wear data yet.

What's solid

The materials, price, colorways and the full list of embellishments come straight from Vans' product page and the release coverage.

What's unknown

How Harris Tweed uppers hold up on a skate shoe over a winter. Tweed is tough cloth, but it's still wool, so it won't shrug off a puddle the way canvas does.

Our read

This is a fashion purchase, not a practical one. Buy it because you like how loud it is. If you're talking yourself into the hardware, buy the loafer.

The rest of the pack

If you want the tweed without the studs

The Loafer 53 is the most minimal shoe in the collection, and the cheapest.

The same Harris Tweed on Vans' Loafer 53, a fuzzy penny loafer with more formal lines and, according to Sneaker News, more minimal detailing than the other two shoes in the pack. It's also the cheapest of the three by $20.

Buy it if

You like the tweed idea and want something you can wear with grown-up clothes.

You're really here for the Old Skool shape.

Before you buy

Four things worth knowing

  • Look at the close-up photos. The jewels, pins and studs are much more visible in person than in a small product shot. Make sure you're into all of it.
  • Treat it like wool. Brush it, spot clean it and keep it out of the washer. A protector spray before the first wear helps.
  • Pick the colorway on purpose. The Old Skool comes in Tweed Navy Blue, Tweed Red / Blue and Tweed Brown. The brown is the easiest to wear with the most.
  • Check the other two shoes. The $130 Slip-On and $120 Loafer 53 use the same tweed, and the loafer drops most of the hardware.

Questions

The ones we get asked

How much are the Harris Tweed Vans?

The Premium Old Skool 36 Harris Tweed is $140. The Harris Tweed Classic Slip-On is $130 and the Harris Tweed Loafer 53 is $120. For comparison, a regular Old Skool is $75 on Vans' site.

When did the Harris Tweed Vans come out?

The fall collection released on September 24, 2026, on Vans' site, with Sneaker Politics also carrying the pack.

What is Harris Tweed?

A wool cloth handwoven by islanders in their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It's protected by its own Act of Parliament, and only cloth that meets the rules gets the Orb certification mark. It's the same fabric you'd find on a heritage sport coat.

Are the studs and gems removable?

Vans doesn't say they are, and they're described as part of the design along with pins and contrast stitching. Assume they're staying put. If you want tweed without the hardware, the Loafer 53 has the most minimal detailing of the three.

How do you clean tweed Vans?

Treat the uppers like a wool jacket, not like canvas. Brush off dirt once it's dry, spot clean gently, and keep them out of the washing machine. A suede and fabric protector spray before the first wear is a smart move.

Do the Old Skool 36 run true to size?

Vans doesn't publish a size note specific to this release, and there isn't much owner feedback on it yet. If you already own a pair of Old Skools, start with that size and check Vans' size chart before you order.
