You may notice that the label on this bottle of Old Lewis Hunter Bourbon is wrapped in plastic wrap as it is falling apart. This bottle, which was found in Italy, was likely bottled in the early 1970’s after being aged in a barrel for 6 years. The distillery was in operation from 1850 until 1974 so it is as if we are able to drink up history with each pour.
The nose on this bourbon is both sweet with honey and speckled with smoke. The taste is sweet with caramel but balanced by some astringent woody notes. The finish is long, smooth but a touch heavy on the oak. For me it is a bourbon that makes you want to go back to it and pour just a little more.
