Even though the term “bachelor pad” hasn’t been used since about 2008 when rapper Gucci Mane reminded hip hop America what the purpose of one with such great (and prolific) detail was, the concept behind the pad is the same. Single guy. Casa dulce. It is your castle as a single lad and with a little luck and skill a woman (or ten or eleven) will be by to check it out.
There are a few important factors though when designing your bachelor pad. Follow them and they will take “manly” to an art form for you and your space.
1. YOU MUST FEEL COMFORTABLE THERE AT ALL TIMES
Don’t try and be someone else’s guy. Don’t imitate just because. What worked for Kanye may not work for you. A lady will see right through an LL Bean guy trying to pull off Miami Beach swagger. Don’t be afraid to deny the Pitbull and instead embrace the Bear Grylls.
2. A LADY SHOULD ALSO FEEL COMFORTABLE AT YOUR PAD
While some ladies may find the obvious placement of a brass pole to compliment your desire to be a fireman (that is what they’re for…right?) they may not be real comfortable with it. Before putting in the lag bolts ask yourself, “do I want a companion who knows the pole intimately and could supplement our income with one?”
3. YOUR PERSONALITY SHOULD SHINE
When you invite a lady home and she accepts, she’s looking to make an assessment of your personality. She wants to find out what kind of person you are when the cameras are off and the lights are out. She wants the real you and to decide whether or not the two of you have a future – be it short term or long term – together or not.
4. A PAD SHOULD STILL FUNCTION AS A HOUSE
What good is a place to live if you can’t actually live in it? A bachelor pad should still function as a house for you and your guests. That means having a large screen television in place of a kitchen is not a wise choice. Man cannot live on DirecTV alone!
5. MAN UP!
Let’s face it. When a woman comes to your place knowing it is a bachelor pad she expects it to reflect the MAN that lives in it. Do yourself a favor and hide the comic collection, stash the PS4, put your dirty clothes….somewhere, and shine up your wine and liquor bottles. A man doesn’t have to be a lumberjack or a metrosexual. There is a great balance. A woman is more often than not looking for a man who is both strong and sensitive, serious and playful, and, above all, honest about himself and his intentions. A true bachelor pad represents just that!
